Injury compensation claims

A boy is set to receive over £1million in compensation after doctors failed to spot low blood sugar levels, it is reported.

Lucas Hillier was born at Good Hope Hospital during the summer of 2007. However, his parents became concerned when at the age of just two days old, Lucas became drowsy and very sleepy. They informed medical staff of their concerns but no action was taken until a paediatrician saw Lucas the next day.

Lucas was then rushed into intensive care, where he spent the next three weeks. His parents were told that his blood sugar levels were low.

Then in November 2007 his parents met doctors who had the results of an MRI scan performed on the baby Lucas. They were told that the hyperglycaemia, caused by low blood sugar, had left Lucas with brain damage.

The brain injury has left Lucas with epilepsy, eyesight problems and limited body movement. The Daily Mail reports that the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust has admitted liability for his injury and he now looks set to receive a large compensation settlement. The money will cover the cost of his care needs in the future, as well as accommodation adapted to his needs.

A spokesperson for the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust offered their sincere apologies to Lucas and his family.
